Holistic Nursing
Holistic nursing care seeks optimal integration of physical, mental (thoughts), emotional (feelings), spiritual, & social/relational/environmental aspects of the whole person. The Registered Nurse (facilitator) recognizes that each person is a unified whole energy field with their environment, yet unique. The RN and client engage in a mutual process whereby the client is an active participant in the process of unfolding optimal health and well being. Generally speaking, the nursing process is utilized (assess, diagnose, implement, evaluate, and remodify as needed). The thorough assessment process fuses both Western Medicine techniques (i.e. medical history) and energy-healing techniques,(chakra and energy field assessment). Nursing diagnosis is an identification of a unique energy pattern or patterns manifested by the individual. Mutual, yet client centered goal planning is initiated and a customized care plan utilizing appropriate holistic nursing modalities is implemented. These modalities include and are not limited to: private & confidential active listening and meaningful dialogue; hands-on therapies such as Reiki, or Therapeutic Touch; other energy-based modalities such as music and projection of color; Guided Imagery/Visualization; Meditation; Diaphramatic Breathing and Progressive Muscle Relaxation. Pre and post modality measurement tools are utilized to evaluate effectiveness of modalities. Referrals to appropriate health or other resources are given as necessary.

I am an LVN in California, LA area…I became (recently) interested, very interested actually, in Holistic type nursing, raw foods etc. This was introduced to me by a long time friend and I am curious, all this seems to be for RNs…what can I learn/do etc, as an LVN!
Thanks
Michael
Congratulations on your new found interest in Holistic Nursing, and thanks for your question Michael. In Canada we do not have an LVN designation, and I'm not sure what the equivalent designation would be here. I suggest you contact the American Holistic Nurses Association via the internet for more information that would be specifically relevant to you in California. When I recently reviewed the AHNA home page it appeared that they may support holistic health care professionals in addition to RN's.
Best Wishes
Debbie
hi there. I'm a Registered nurse in Vancouver, BC. I am becoming more interested in holistic nursing and just love your definition of holistic health. I am currently working in the community in Home Health. I admire your entrepreneur nursing career path and perhaps one day will do the same. I would love to hear a bit of your story if you're comfortable !
Christie,
Thanks for your comments. For more information on Holistic Nursing in Canada I refer you to the Canadian Holistic Nurses Association. They provide 2 levels of holistic nursing education in their specialization program. I believe they can be contacted at http://www.chna.ca. Also there is a conference to be held in Vancouver area this fall on Holistic Nursing; more information would be available on the same website. I would be honored to share some of my story with you…what specifically would you like to know?
Warmly,
Debbie
Can a LPN take the course ? Also how can a LPN with Reiki Level 1,2, 3 be used in the Holistic field, how would one go about it ? Thanks.
Laurie, thanks for your great questions. As far as I know it's designed for Registered Nurses. Please contact the Canadian Holistic Nurses Association directly to confirm though. For ideas on how to implement Reiki I suggest contacting the International Association of Reiki Professionals via internet. They have excellent information on how to set up a private practice, and past articles on how to use Reiki in various settings… Best of luck to you!
In light & love,
Debbie
